My Teaching Philosophy
As an early childhood educator, my philosophy is similar to Jean Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development. Piaget’s theory takes the naturalistic approach for understanding children and how they learn. I believe that observing children in their own environment is the most effective way of understanding what level of learning each child is on. Each child develops at different levels and understanding what level they are on helps educators know how to scaffold their learning and development. I relate to Piaget’s theory because it is centered on children and how they develop.
Piaget saw children differently than he saw adults. He showed the World that children think in different ways compared to adults. Like Jean Piaget, I believe children come into the World with a basic mental structure. Have you ever seen a newborn child minutes after they are born? From personal experience, I have seen an infant no more than five minutes old looking around with wide-open eyes. Piaget believed that because babies come into the World with the ability to suck a nipple and the ability to grasp. These are basic structures of survival.
Piaget’s experiences and observations have helped me to further my education and continues to help me better understand every child and how each of them develop and learn. His thoughts will keep helping me to understand and communicate with children presently and in my many years of educating young minds that are ahead of me.
